Gums perform the critical function of holding the teeth in place and safeguarding the tooth roots. If your gums are unhealthy, your teeth may become loose. Neglecting gums care can result in dental issues like bleeding, swollen gums, loose teeth, and even tooth loss.

If you reside in West Jordan, UT, and have issues relating to gum health, reach out to Dr. Tyler Reading at Reading Pediatric Dentistry for comprehensive care for your gums and teeth.

Gum Diseases

Neglecting your oral health can lead to the following issues concerning your gums:

  • Gingivitis

Gingivitis is caused by bacteria accumulating around the gum line. This condition advances rapidly and can result in infections. Gingivitis can cause the gums to become swollen, red, inflamed, and bleed during brushing.

Plaque buildup on the teeth is one of the most prevalent causes of gingivitis. Plaque is a sticky, yellowish film of bacteria that coats the teeth. It is formed as a result of the breakdown of carbohydrates and sugar.

  • Periodontitis

A more advanced form of gingivitis is periodontitis wherein the infection progresses to affect the hard and soft tissues surrounding the teeth. Periodontitis causes infections and bone resorption.

  • Gum Recession

Gum recession is a process that causes the gums surrounding the teeth to recede and expose the tooth root. Reasons for gum recession include periodontal disease, aggressive tooth brushing, hormonal changes, or improper dental care.

Minor recession can be treated with the help of antibiotics and scaling and root planing, a procedure that removes bacteria buildup on the teeth and allows the gums to reattach.

Taking Care of Your Gums

Maintaining gum health is critical for good oral health. Below are some tips for safeguarding your gums:

  • Clean the plaque from your teeth using a soft-bristled toothbrush
  • Floss each day
